The rapper announced on Sunday he’ll perform at the Nov. 26 game
Fans go crazy. Chris Schwegler, Special to Detroit News
Sean made the announcement via an Instagram post Sunday that showed
him in the Lions locker room next to Lions running back Joique Bell and
defensive end Ezekiel Ansah. “After killin the arena downtown, Detroit I
will be performing at Half Time on Thanksgiving Day @ Ford Field!” Sean
wrote. “So turn the TV on while u cut that turkey!”
The team announced the performance on Twitter Sunday night with the same photo, saying ".@BigSean was @fordfield today and he'll be back on Thanksgiving to perform at halftime."
Sean had a busy weekend following Friday’s concert at Joe Louis Arena, which was capped off with an appearance by Eminem and the first-ever live performance of “Detroit Vs. Everybody,” the Detroit anthem that features Em, Sean, Royce da 5’9”, Dej Loaf, Danny Brown and Trick Trick. On Saturday, Sean spoke to the city’s youth at a career-building event at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and he later visited with the Michigan Wolverines and Coach Jim Harbaugh after the team’s victory against Rutgers. (Harbaugh tweeted out a picture of himself and the rapper, thanking Sean for “hanging w/ the fellas” and complimenting his song “One Man Can Change the World,” calling it “a real toe-tapper.”)
The last place Lions, who had a bye this week, play the Philadelphia Eagles at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 26.
The Big Sean performance will be the Lions’ biggest Thanksgiving halftime show since 2012, when Kid Rock did the halftime honors.
In 2014, children from the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences Show Choir performed at the game, and in 2013, Waterford singer and second season “Voice” contestant Tony Lucca took on halftime duty.
Over the years, artists such as Bon Jovi (2002), Mariah Carey (2005), John Fogerty (2006) and the Goo Goo Dolls (2007) have performed at halftime of the Lions Thanksgiving game.
In 2011, after much-derided Canadian rock band Nickelback was announced as the game’s halftime performer, thousands of fans signed an online petition to bar the group from performing. The performance went on as scheduled.
